Educational Goals
Here is my plan for this semester:
Fibers: Surface design. Using MX reactive dyes, immersion dying, painting with dyes, screen printing, and resists. I already know how to paint with dyes, screen print (one screen) and some types of resist so this semester will mostly be about improving my existing skills. I also hope to learn silk painting. My text will be Art Cloth: a Guide to Surface Design for Fabric by Jane Dunnewold.
Drawing: Basic seeing and drawing, black and white, information and concept drawing, drawing from memory and imagination, and some color. I also hope to learn pen and ink and botanical drawing. My text for this semester will be Bert Dodson's Keys to Drawing. I would say that my drawing skill is about intermediate/high intermediate. I mostly draw from observation.
Design: 2-D. Black and white and color perception, basic design elements, abstraction, color theory, use of color and pattern, perception of space, subject, content, metaphor, narrative, and social commentary. My text will be Art Fundamentals: Theory and Practice (multiple authors). I have no training in design.
Art history: I hope to cover Neolithic to 14th Century Western art in the first semester. (Don't worry, I have future plans to learn about non-Western art!) My text will be Art History, 3rd Edition, by Marilyn Stockstad.
Business for artists: Here is an area I am absolutely clueless in, but is essential to my future! My books include The Boss of You: Everything a Woman Needs to Know to Start, Run, and Maintain Her Own Business, by Lauren Bacon and Emira Mears; Start and Run a Craft Business by William Hynes; The Handmade Marketplace: How to Sell your Crafts Locally, Globally, and On-Line by Kari Chapin; and Craft, Inc.: How to Turn your Creative Hobby into a Business by Meg Mateo Ilasco.
